Over the weekend, something that I’ve been trying to articulate over the past couple of weeks about the torture issue finally broke through the fog and resulted in the following realization; is the left’s moral posturing over torture frustrating to conservative Christians because it is essentially the bizzaro world equivalent of their absolutist stance on abortion?
I believe the answer here is yes as we now have two state sanctioned practices (though only one is actually illegal) that one side views as deplorable, while the other side believes can be justifiable on certain conditions. The arguments both for and against differ in many respects obviously (and I don't mean to downplay the seriousness of either issue), but the hard-liners should at least acknowledge the similar philosophical approaches they are taking in making their claim. And for the record, I’m personally against both.
On another note, who would've thought that this would put me in the same camp as both Ronald Reagan and the far-left? Times, they are a changin...

Well, said, sir! I couldn't agree more. Although I'm not sure I really want to be associated with Reagan (who, like his vice-president George H.W. Bush, changed his position on abortion late in his political life).
Thanks for the comment Jeff (I knew you'd throw one out before too long). As you can probably empathize with, I'm truly baffled by this issue and which sides people seem to be taking. This was essentially my attempt to think out loud about why many social conservatives don't seem to be against torture, regardless of the techniques employed.
Mike, your point is a good one, and I found more evidence on your behalf. The other day on "The O'Reilly Factor," he played a clip of Ann Coulter debating with Joy Behar (from The View) about waterboarding. Behar asked Coulter if she would want to be waterboarded, and Coulter responded by asking Behar if she would want to be aborted? There you go.
There's also an interesting discussion about torture at http://theologica.blogspot.com/2009/04/defining.... I don't know what I think about it.
Great comment Leah. This issue is still baffling to me, so once I can wrap my arms around it a bit more, you can expect a follow up to this conversation.
